Asphalt Paving: Our Process

Paving asphalt is relatively straightforward; as long as the surface to be paved has a suitable sub-base and drainage system—and the contractor follows all safety procedures for working with the asphalt—the process will be successful.

N

Step 1: Excavation

The first step in an asphalt pavement project is removing any existing dirt, gravel, concrete, chips, or other materials that are not needed for the new parking lot area or any surfaces being constructed. If there is a good base present, this step may not need to be done at all. However, if the ground is level but does not have any base whatsoever, excavation will be necessary before paving.

N

Step 2: Subbase Preparation

Next, the subgrade must be prepared to support a parking lot or any other type of paved surface. Since a parking lot will have a good deal of weight on it at all times—vehicles, soil compaction from pedestrians, and more—it’s essential that the subbase is carefully constructed to support everything. The subbase must be compacted and graded correctly, with particular attention paid to curbs, driveways, and corners where the weight will be concentrated.

N

Step 3: Installing Asphalt Base

If the surface to be paved has a good foundation and drainage system—and the contractor follows all safety procedures for working with hot asphalt—the process can be a success.

Asphalt is a liquid that consists of water, gravel, aggregate (stones), and tar. The hot asphalt mixture will be applied to the prepared sub-base, where it must be compacted and graded correctly to form a solid foundation for the parking lot or other type of surface being constructed.

N

Step 4: Applying Asphalt Coating

Once the asphalt has been compacted and graded to perfection to ensure a good base for the parking lot, it must be covered with mineral-aggregate material known as ‘fines.’ This is a highly integral step to ensure the asphalt has the maximum possible lifespan.

N

Step 5: Finishing Touches

After applying fines to the surface, rollers are used to ensure everything has been pressed down firmly and correctly graded. Once the top of the asphalt is smooth, it’s time to apply a sealer coat that will create an extra layer of protection for the asphalt.

N

Step 6: Open for Business

Now that the pavement has been appropriately prepared and finished, it’s ready to be opened to traffic. Conway Asphalt Paving is available 24/7 to take your call for a free estimate on any paving job you have going on in SC.

N

Step 7: Maintenance

It’s important to understand that asphalt is not indestructible. The pavement needs to be maintained regularly, which means grading, cleaning, and sealing it at least once every couple of years. However, this will usually depend on how often the asphalt gets driven upon or exposed to sunlight (the more, the faster it will need to be maintained).
